Author YY Chan – Spotlight

author YY Chan

Author YY Chan has a soul as sweet as her smile – but I may be biased…

This delightful woman is a breath of fresh air. She has shared so much knowledge and lent support more times than I can count on my journey to becoming a published author. I will forever be indebted to her and am blessed to call her a friend.

Meet the Author YY Chan

Author YY Chan was born in Hong Kong but grew up in sunny Brisbane, Australia where she had Christmas during summer. She returned to Hong Kong to teach English after graduating from university with First Class Honors in Bachelor of Primary Education. She also has a Master of Arts in English Language Teaching, and has been teaching English for over ten years.

When her father passed away, she took a break from teaching to travel, read, and write. She now tutors English and works freelance for different educational institutes.

Healing Through Grief

‘Can You Hear Me, Daddy?’ is her debut picture book, based on her experience of losing her father to pancreatic cancer. The book received two Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in 2020.

Her latest book, ‘Grandma, It’s Me!’ is about how a little girl learns to cope and help support her grandma with dementia. The story is also based on her personal experience with her grandmother.

She found writing these stories extremely therapeutic in helping her deal with the losses and heal from her grief. Although these experiences caused a great deal of pain and sorrow, she found faith and hope in God through them, and believes that they have helped shape her, and gave her a new perspective on life, love, death, grief, and even hope and joy.

She hopes that in sharing her experience through these stories, she can help children overcome pain and suffering from the inevitable challenges in life, build up resilience, and be able to express themselves openly about their feelings and emotions from an early age.

Growing up, she had not read any books about death, loss, or grief and wished that she had when her own father suffered and died from pancreatic cancer. She saw that there was a lack of children’s literature on such topics, and were rarely discussed with children, especially in the Asian culture. It is her hope that her stories can help families open up and start discussions about difficult topics with children in a gentle and sensitive way and provide a safe space for them to share their emotions and feelings.

Grandma, It’s Me by Author YY Chan

💜💜💜 YY Chan’s NEW RELEASE is near and dear to my heart….

This touching children’s story, written with journal entries, is a journey of dementia. Filled with beautiful illustrations, learn to support loved ones with love, patience, and understanding. The author poured her heart into this book to reflect the true story of her and her grandma. She took a heavy subject and simply wrapped it in love.

I can’t decide if I like the story of how her grandparents met or the addition of actual photographs more. I’m amazed how the author put an uplifting, and at times, funny spin on such a heavy topic. The resources and discussion pages are a great addition.

Endorsed by dementia caregivers and professionals, Grandma, It’s Me, received five star reviews from Readers’ Favorite!
