This middle grade book features two girls that are as different as night is to day. The problem? Their parents are dating. And they all go on vacation together. And neither girl wants this reality. Great premise for a book but I would hope the parents would have introduced the girls before throwing them together for two weeks to share a room.
I didn’t particularly like either girl – one is an ultra popular spoiled brat concerned with the latest trends and fashions. The other is on the nerdy side. While this is conceivable, I found myself loving to hate each of them. Surely they each had some good qualities and depth? For the most part it was easy to see what was coming next. The story seemed rushed, two weeks is a short time, especially for all of this drama.
I do believe many middle grade kids (who the book was written for) will be able to relate to what the author is putting out there: the bullying, the all-that girl, the nerd, and dealing with a complex and disappointing family dynamic especially at the hard age represented.
About the Author
Marilyn Kaye is the author of many books for young readers, including the Spyglass Sisterhood, Gifted, and Replica series. Marilyn earned a master’s degree in library science at Emory University and a PhD at the University of Chicago, and taught children’s literature at St. John’s University in New York for more than twenty years. She lives in Paris, France.
