Guest Post For Abigail and the Waterfall
In 1901, famous naturalist John Muir wrote these words: “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.”
Reading that John Muir found the people of 1901 “nerve-shaken” and “over-civilized” is a bit surprising. Can you imagine how he might describe the society we’ve built in 2025? Living in a technology-obsessed world, navigating constant connectivity and endless notifications can certainly shake the nerves in ways John Muir probably never dreamed possible. And yet, if he were here, his antidote to the problem would be so simple. Go to the mountains. Enter the wildness. Seek out the fountains of life.
Going even further back than 1901, we have the original book of life—the Bible. In the Bible, we see similar themes of nature being good for our souls—a place where we can see God’s glory. We also see the clear mandate to take care of this beautiful earth that God has created. Most of us, living in this place together, whether we subscribe more to the Bible or the writings of John Muir, would agree that there is something special and essential about being in nature. And not only is it important for us to preserve this life-giving wildness around us, but to teach those that come after us to do the same.
Sharing a love of nature
with our kids seems like it would be an easy task—it’s all around us! But with the fast pace of life and schedules that don’t seem to let up, even taking a family hike sometimes feels a bit out of reach. That’s one reason why books can be an amazing tool. Through books, we can share with our kids the things we care about. One book that does this beautifully when it comes to caring for the world around us is the new children’s book from IVP Kids, Abigail and the Waterfall: Loving God’s Good Earth. In Abigial and the Waterfall, explore the wonders of creation and learn to care for God’s good earth!

Most of all, enjoy your time exploring, learning more about nature, and creating memorable adventures with your family! Here are two last things to ponder before we set forth on our journeys…
“The earth belongs to the Lord. And so does everything in it.” -Psalm 24:1
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” -John Muir, Our National Parks, 1901
