“You’re a boy!” the kids exclaim. “You can’t play with a doll.”
But Travis has lots of confidence and little regard for social norms. There are so many things to like in the world. Why should there be limits that keep him from enjoying those things?
“I am who I am! There’s no boy or girl line. In sports or in dress-up, I’ll sparkle and shine.”
Dresses and armor one day, ballet and basketball the next. Travis sets no limits on what he enjoys doing. But when some of the kids on the playground begin to pick on him, will Travis dull his shine or decide to truly dazzle?
Complete with colorful illustrations and bold comebacks, this empowering story encourages kids of any gender to challenge the social norm and reveal their true selves.
Dazzling Travis by Hannah Carmona Dias carries the key message of gender stereotypes and being different supported by the many advocates of positive parenting solutions. This book will perfectly round out your home or school library among other stories that focus on confidence and being who you are. Stories like the work of Alexandra Penfold (All Are Welcome) and Gabi Garcia (I Can Do Hard Things).
This book comes alongside a free Reader’s Guide. Included in the guide are activities that go beyond the book, like the one encouraging children to write themselves notes of positive self-talk. Download your copy direct from the publisher website.
About the Author
Hannah Carmona lives in her imagination and on the occasion that she manages to write those thoughts down, she creates something that the world knows as bestselling picture books. She is a proud Latinx (who doesn’t speak a word of Spanish), Audiobook Narrator, Herbalist, and mom of two fierce girls and a fur baby.
When not doing any of the above, she can sometimes be found vlogging on Youtube or eating a family-sized pack of Twizzlers.
Previous to 2019, her books were published under Hannah Carmona Dias. Follow Hannah:

Review
It’s okay to be different, to do you, to be original, and authentic. Traditional gender roles are outdated and it’s about time books like Dazzling Travis let kids (and adults) know it’s okay for girls to throw baseballs and for boys to play with dolls. Self expression, standing up for yourself, and bullies are addressed in a simple and effective way. The story, written in rhyme, coupled with fantastic illustrations, is sure to hold everyone’s attention. The guided questions were an added bonus. The book was gifted to me for an honest review. Thank you Hannah Carmona & Cardinal Rule Press.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day
Multicultural Children’s Book Day is January 26, 2023 and is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Ten years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
