Not to their college-age daughter, Maggie, who is devastated. Or to Ellie’s father, Frank, who grows as cold as a retiree can get in Orlando. As for Ellie’s mother, Bunny: no, no, no. She doesn’t want to hear it. After a dreadful weekend, Ellie and Jonah return home to New Jersey with hearts and minds still set on a split. Until the extraordinary morning Ellie wakes up to an alternate version of the present day―one in which she, and a passing stranger named Jonah, never married.

Over the span of an inexplicable week, Ellie sees how her world―and the world of everyone she loves―unfolded through a different course in time. And this time could change everything all over again.

Review for Some Other Time

Okay, so this book… The first part is rough. Like, “grit your teeth and power through” rough. The main character is a walking, talking red flag — so selfish it’s almost impressive. She’s got this tiny, sad idea of what life should be, and she tries to shove her husband and daughter into it like they’re IKEA furniture she’s forcing together with the wrong instructions. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t work. Husband bounces, daughter’s stressed, and our protagonist is shocked that her world is falling apart.

But then the book gets good. The middle part is where the magic happens. The main character starts to open her eyes and realize, oh hey, maybe being a black hole of neediness isn’t a great personality trait. She starts to question things, grow a bit, and finally thinks about someone other than herself.

By the end she’s okay and starts making better choices, being less of a human steamroller, and even discovers the concept of empathy. Turns out life is nicer when you’re not trying to control everyone. The middle and end was solid enough to redeem the slow start. I just wish the author hadn’t made us wade through a swamp of selfishness for so long to get to the good stuff.

About The Author

Angela Brown is the author of OLIVIA STRAUSS IS RUNNING OUT OF TIME (Little A, 2024), which was a Zibby Owens Book Club Pick and a Women’s Fiction Pick in Amazon’s First Reads program. Her sophomore novel, SOME OTHER TIME, is forthcoming (Little A, 2025). In addition to her books, Angela’s writing has appeared in the New York Times, Real Simple, Lit Hub, New Jersey Monthly, and many other publications. She holds an MFA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Angela lives in New Jersey with her husband and two young children, where she is currently at work on her next novel.
