Harry Altman
The traces people leave behind are not always enough to keep them visible. Harry Altman: Buffalo’s Master Showman by Susan Fenster follows the reconstruction of an entertainment world that once felt unstoppable before gradually disappearing from public view.

About the Book
Harry Altman built venues that became major destinations for entertainment, drawing audiences into spaces filled with music, celebrity appearances, and constant activity. For years, his work helped shape a nightlife culture built on spectacle and momentum.
But the energy surrounding that success masked how unstable the business really was. Entertainment trends shifted quickly, audiences changed, and the systems supporting those packed venues slowly began to collapse. What once seemed permanent started fading, including Altman’s own place within the history of the era.
Using surviving advertisements, archival records, and historical fragments, Susan Fenster pieces together a story that extends beyond performance and publicity. The book explores the tension between visibility and disappearance, asking what happens when someone spends years building experiences people never forget, only to become forgotten themselves.
Harry Altman: Buffalo’s Master Showman revisits a lost entertainment landscape and the figure who stood at the center of it while the lights were still on.

Review for Harry Altman
This was such a fascinating read! While it tells the story of Harry Altman’s life, it also paints a vivid picture of Buffalo and Western New York through decades of change. I loved all the historical details, from the nightclub scene and entertainment trends of the era to quirky attractions like dance marathons and pole-sitting contests. The abundance of photographs really brought the times to life, especially images of places that no longer exist. Thoroughly researched and packed with interesting stories, this is a great pick for history buffs and anyone curious about America’s entertainment past.
