Fanny may be a small-town defense attorney in upstate New York, but it’s 1961 with growing opportunities for women. She’s not about to listen to naysayers who encourage her to marry and stay at home to raise a family. Fanny meets Gina, whose husband Kenny is perceived by society as a lesser man because of his limited intelligence. When Kenny is accused of murder, Fanny takes on the case. Gina hopes for her grandmother’s support, but a hidden act of betrayal during WWII when Gina and her grandmother lived in Berlin, threatens to unsettle Gina and destabilize the case Fanny is building on behalf of Kenny.

Set against the backdrop of the construction of the Berlin Wall, The Last Secret Kept explores the beauty of individualism while demolishing the invisible walls built between ourselves and our loved ones.

Book Blurbs

“This historical fiction legal drama leaves you guessing and hoping. While themes of bigotry play out on the global stage at the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War, we are glued to an upstate New York town where a man with developmental disabilities faces not only a murder charge, but also society’s stigma. With deeply developed characters, Elaine Stock has crafted a beautiful story of humanity, empathy, and found family.”–Lisa Montanaro, author of Everything We Thought Was True

“Who doesn’t love a family saga chock-full of unexpected heroes, evil villains, and worldwide chaos? The Last Secret Kept takes us down the proverbial path of family dysfunction with pathos, passion, and a dose of reality called Fanny – my new personal fave fictional legal eagle! Don’t miss the latest tale penned by the lovely Ms. Elaine Stock. An entertaining read, and yes, the ending holds surprises.”–Kay Smith Blum, author of Tangles

Review for The Last Secret Kept

This book swept me up from page one and didn’t let go. Set across two richly drawn timelines—1940s Berlin and 1961 New York—it’s a gripping blend of family drama and legal intrigue that somehow manages to feel both epic and intimate.

Told through three points of view (a shoutout to Helene, Gina, and Fanny), the story delves deep into generational secrets, moral dilemmas, and the ripple effects of war. I loved that each woman had a distinct voice and her own piece of the puzzle to reveal. Helene, as the grandmother with a past, Gina as the granddaughter grappling with the present, and Fanny, the badass lawyer with her own layers, each brought something unique to the table.

Now, let’s talk about Kenny. While the story revolves around his murder case, he ends up being the emotional heart of the novel. Society might see him as simple-minded, but he’s written with so much quiet power and heart that he completely stole the show for me.

All in all, this book gave me characters I’ll be thinking about for a long time, courtroom drama that didn’t make me zone out, and a poignant look at how the past never really stays buried. Totally recommend.
