Review for Bright Little Girls

Lorna Hollifield’s murder mystery brings a fresh, unpredictable vibe to the genre, thanks to her unforgettable protagonist, Eliane. A wannabe writer, Zelda Fitzgerald superfan, a relatable mess, navigating OCD and a rapidly unraveling life—especially after her roommate turns up dead. And let me tell you, Eliane doesn’t just steal the show—she is the show.

This story plays with multiple points of view, most notably a ghost’s perspective (yes, really), which adds an eerie and unique lens. It also jumps between then and now timelines, keeping you on your toes and layering in suspense.

While the beginning is a bit of a slow burn, the payoff is worth it. The backstories are rich, the characters feel incredibly real (I was side-eyeing everyone), and mental health themes are thoughtfully woven in. The relationship between Eliane and Jett—told partly through letters, poems, and songs—was a highlight.

The twisty ending caught me off guard in the best way, though a little more emotional build-up before the final act would’ve been good. Still, it left me thinking, and I can see this book sparking some juicy book club conversations.

All in all, this was my first read from Hollifield, and now I’m definitely curious to see what she writes next. Murder, ghosts, obsession, and poetry? Sign me up.
