From multi-award-winning historical fiction author Ashley E. Sweeney comes a family saga about the Irish immigrant experience spanning New York, Chicago, and Colorado so compelling that, USA Today best-selling author Kelli Estes says, “I read this story in one sitting.”

A rich family saga of history, heritage, and matters of the heart.

Feisty and resilient thirteen-year-old Mary Agnes Coyne, forced from her family home in western Ireland after an accusation of incest, endures a treacherous sea voyage across the Atlantic alone in the fall of 1886. With only a few pounds to her name and letter to a parish priest in hand, she begins life in America. From the tenements of New York to the rough alleys of Chicago, Mary Agnes suffers the bitter taste of prejudice for the crime of being poor, Catholic, and Irish.

After moving west to Colorado, Mary Agnes again faces difficulties as she grapples with her future. Will she ever find a home to call her own? On her terms?

Book Blurbs

“The Irish Girl is a story of resilience amidst trauma, love amidst loss, self- acceptance amidst rejection. I read this story in one sitting and found myself thinking about this fiercely strong girl long after I finished.” KELLI ESTES, USA Today best-selling author of The Girl Who Wrote in Silk

“The Irish Girl captured me from the very first page! At times both tragic and hopeful, this sweeping literary drama is ultimately a story of perseverance. Brimming with rich historical details and beautiful, lilting prose. Addictive!” MICHELLE COX, author of The Henrietta and Inspector Howard series

“Mary Agnes Coyne leaps off the page, lively, troubled, hungry for life and love. The Irish Girl is another winner!” SUSAN J. TWEIT, author of Bless the Birds

I fell deeply under the spell of The Irish Girl: a heroic yet relatable immigrant’s tale of a 13-year-old girl sent to America who faces every challenge with steely determination and, ultimately, hope. Martha Conway, author of The Physician’s Daughter

Lyrical and powerful, The Irish Girl celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit. Mary Agnes is a heroine to root for, a young woman who trusts in her own worth even as others try their hardest to diminish her. Ashley E. Sweeney has written a novel to savor, an immersive and moving story of love, courage, and the life-changing reverberation of small kindnesses. Ginny Kubitz Moyer, author of A Golden Life

Review for Irish Girl

I’ve never met a shy Irishman. At a young age, Mary Agnes faced adversity with spunk and gusto. She’s one of those characters you love to love. She sets out for America as a poor Irish Catholic to face more difficulties. Mary Agnes surely didn’t live on Easy Street. This inspirational story touched my heart while admiring her courage, resilience, and bravery. It’s been a while since I truly couldn’t put down a book untili I knew Mary Agnes was going to be okay. I highly recommend this book.
