About The Vichy Treasury
Dakar, French West Africa
September 1940
French West Africa has not been kind to Gavin Briggs. Forced into the life of a smuggler and scoundrel, he has accumulated debt with the wrong people and now has one last chance to make it right. But when a British invasion armada arrives on the horizon as they prepare their boat to depart, things immediately go from bad to worse. Intercepted as he tries to escape, the British commander Gavin’s contraband. All seems lost until redemption arrives in the shape of a shadowy figure named Frederick Atkinson of the British spy service. As Atkinson stares down the imprisoned smuggler, he sees an opportunity.
A nation’s treasure, worth billions, has been hidden in the dusty badlands of the Sahara. A treasure of gold bullion that was stolen and hidden away when the Nazis invaded France. A treasure that whosoever controls could tip the balance between the Axis and Allied forces. In Gavin Briggs, Atkinson sees an expendable asset that can help him find the treasure. His offer is simple: find the gold and be rescued from their debt. Seeing an opportunity, Gavin’s decision is simple, and a race against time begins. As Gavin is forced into a world of spies, subterfuge, and violence, he is forced into a scavenger hunt that leads across the desert and through the barren Sahels of the Sahara to find where the Vichy Treasury has been hidden.
Reviews for The Vichy Treasury
Early Reviews: “Author Conor Bender takes a true WWII event, wraps it in a fictional format, mixes real historical people with layered, believable fictional characters, crafts a plot full of suspense, then like an alchemist, mixes this magical blend and the result is pure gold.”
Truly, an outstanding book. It had great depth and was rich in the plot line. Additionally, it was very well researched, so the people who are World War II buffs like me were not stumbling through historical errors. The characters were very well molded. My favorite was Gavin, who turns out to be a real American hero in the war.
The pace of the book was exceptionally fast and one that I just could not put down. It has an interesting ending and it leaves one with the appetite for more. And the author has crafted the ending, so I am not surprised if there is more coming. I highly recommend this book, especially for those who are World War II military buffs.
My thoughts: Take me on a treasure hunt! An impressive and well researched book with spies and traitors. Beginning with a great plot and expanded on with characters of depth, the story flowed nicely. The focus was on the gold that was needed to support the war and is not a typical war read.
