When author Eden Hart floats into Tucson’s Antigone Books in all her dazzling perfection to give a reading, Kat, a struggling writer, can’t help but compare herself. Professionally, physically, socially―Eden is Kat’s aspiration. Thankfully, Kat’s life starts to take on its own Eden-like glow when her literary future takes shape and she falls madly in love with Jacob, the effortlessly charismatic son of her literary hero. Kat’s life is finally her fantasy realized: a burgeoning career, mentoring from her idol, and a wildly fulfilling relationship. But how long can she keep this up? And when will disappointment tap Kat on the shoulder yet again?

As demons from her past begin to surface, Kat’s mental health craters, and this halcyon dream slips through her fingers. Obsessed with reclaiming her idealized life, Kat develops an insidious plan to not only bring Jacob back into her world, but also punish anyone who dares to replace her.

About The Author

Heather Hach is a screenwriter (Freaky Friday and What to Expect When You’re Expecting) and Tony-nominated and Olivier-winning Broadway librettist (Legally Blonde the Musical). A graduate of the University of Colorado School of Journalism, Hach then went on to become a magazine editor, an improv comedy troupe member and, even weirder yet, a judge on MTV’s “The Search for the Next Elle Woods”. She was a mediocre P.A. on TV’s “Caroline in the City” and a truly terrible writer’s assistant on “Dilbert.” Thankfully, in 1999, she won the Walt Disney Screenwriting Fellowship and has been writing ever since. She also wrote the YA novel Freaky Monday with Mary Rodgers. The Trouble with Drowning is her adult novel debut. Hach lives in Manhattan Beach with her husband, two kids, a charming goldendoodle and a weird pug.

The Trouble With Drowning Reviews

“Tony-nominated Heather Hach, an accomplished writer of stage and screen, makes her adult fiction debut with THE TROUBLE WITH DROWNING, a splashy, twisty psychological thriller about a trouble young writer who intertwines herself with her ex-boyfriend’s family and then refuses to let go. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as Hach expertly twists the screws tighter and tighter, building to a chilling, cinematic finish. A page-turning debut crackling with tension and personality.” — Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author of “The Paris Daughter”

“I picked up THE TROUBLE WITH DROWNING intending to read a few chapters. Instead, I was walking around reading the whole day—on the subway, walking down the sidewalk—I ended up finishing it in a day. A fun, twisty ride of a book!”— Rachel Dratch, former Saturday Night Live cast member and author of Girl Walks Into A Bar

“The fastest-paced slow burn you won’t be able to put down! Obsessively readable and beautifully observed, THE TROUBLE WITH DROWNING has it all—chills, laughs and timely themes. It’s a hit!” — Laura Bell Bundy, Tony-nominated actress for Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: the Musical

“Expertly crafted, Hach’s psychological thriller will have readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page. Her novel also serves as an insightful commentary on the double standard for women today, whose narratives are deemed either sympathetic or crazy.”— Amanda Brown, author of Legally Blonde

More Reviews

“The heat is turned way up on this writer’s tale of passion and the desire to belong. THE TROUBLE WITH DROWNING brilliantly proves we are all capable of writing our own story. The question is will anyone believe it?” — Jerry Mitchell, Tony-winning director and choreographer for Kinky Boots and Legally Blonde the Musical

“The TROUBLE WITH DROWNING is a deliciously hilarious and wonderfully delightful blast from start to finish! A page-turner filled with chills and laughs, it’s got it all. Hach puts up a magnifying glass to our social media-obsessed world, exploring big themes through characters who are layered and relatable. It’s a hit in all the ways you want a book to hit you!” — Annaleigh Ashford, Tony-winning actress for You Can’t Take It With You

This suspenseful and fascinating read will have you laughing and crying – sometimes at the same time! I was riveted from the beginning by wonderful characters and a slow burn. As demons from her past surface, Kat’s mental health crashes. She becomes obsessed with reclaiming the life of her dreams. With cunning, she plots to get Jacob back while punishing anyone who dares to get in her way. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, then this is the book for you. Surprise twists keep coming and the ending is explosive. I’d happily read more by this author.
